In 1959, the third medical school of Thailand was established in the city of Chiang Mai as the School of Medicine at Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, University of Medical Science. It became the formal Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University when Chiang Mai University was established in 1965. Since then the Faculty has grown continuously and is now the largest medical school in northern Thailand. The Faculty of Medicine consists of two hospitals and one center including Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, the Sriphat Medical Center, and the Center for Medical Excellence, respectively. The campus is made up of a variety of attractive, multi-story buildings which provide modern and well-equipped facilities for teaching, research and patient care.
As part of the Faculty of Medicine, the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital serves as a training and education center that provides super-tertiary medical care for patients in Chiang Mai province and 17 other provinces in the Northern region of Thailand. The hospital maintains 1,400 patient beds, 69 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 92 sub-ICU beds, and 28 operating rooms. There are approximately 1,300,000 patients in the out-patient departments and 48,000 in the in-patient departments per year. To improve the quality of medical services especially for complicated medical conditions and to provide excellent academic services, the hospital promotes interdisciplinary approaches and utilization of high-technology equipments.
The Sriphat Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine was established in 1997. It is a 150-bed general hospital which meets the highest international standards of health care and medical treatment. The hospital uses state-of-the-art equipments in its many departments including the GI Center and Endoscopy Unit, the Hemodialysis Clinic, the Heart Center, the Stroke Center, the Lactation Clinic, the CCU and the ICU. Center for Medical Excellence is emerging as a vital strategic asset for managing complex change initiatives and promoting collaboration and the application of the best practices, data integration, project management, enterprise architecture, business and IT optimization, and enterprise-wide access to information.
